26 Shirts, 25 years, 1 cool tradition

Published: July 09, 2014
Author: John Nagy ’00

It first raised $17,000 in 1990 to bankroll the rites of spring better known as AnTostal, then $100,000 more when a car accident on Notre Dame Avenue left a Chinese graduate student in need of long-term medical care. Its artwork has featured some of the most questionable likenesses of Notre Dame football coaches ever to have received University approval.…

The Shirt: Commencement Edition

|

The Shirt Committee 2014

Shirt fans come from all backgrounds: we’ve seen former employees, alumni and Notre Dame supporters in general demonstrate their love for The Shirt Project — both the product and the causes it supports. For young alumni and current students, their collections oftentimes include the Shirts that mark their years in school and any additional seasons when they could visit for home football games. For one 2014 graduate, however, the collection means a lot more. …

The Lost Shirt

The Shirt Committee 2014

How much do you love The Shirt? Would you buy it for four years straight, as most Notre Dame students do? Would you buy one for every year you come to a football game, as many fans do? Would you hunt down each one in The Shirt’s 25-year history?

Former campus security officer Kyle Hall would. He’s managed to collect all but the 1991 and 1996 versions of The Shirt, and for reasonable prices, he says.…

What about the color?

|

The Shirt Committee 2014

The first major decision The Shirt Project executive committee makes is what color the next year’s Shirt will be. These days, we choose the vendor, then the color, then the design, but in the past, choosing the color often came well after the committee members had developed the design.

A great example is The Shirt 1998. I found multiple color variations in our closet in LaFortune Student Center, the room where we keep old materials — and a few old Shirts! — from our 25-year history. Did you see it on Instagram
